Retief Goosen

Much more than the younger clone of Ernie Els , Retief Goosen firmly established himself among the finest players in the world with his victories in the U.S. Open (his second) and the Tour Championship in the U.S. and the European Open in 2004. His Masters credentials are quite respectable, finishing tied for 13th here the past two years and second to Tiger Woods in 2002. He finished the year ranked second on the European money list, sixth among the U.S. pros and ranked fourth in the world.

Retief Goosen possesses a long fluid swing, good distance off the tee and a precise short game. Perhaps most of all, he seems to possess a relentless will. He displayed that resolve in an invincible putting display at the U.S. Open last year that finally caught and wore down another brilliant performance by Phil Mickelson .

All the great ones say a player's ability to control his own mind is the most important asset in winning major tournaments. If he's near the lead turning into Amen Corner this year, Retief Goosen's opponents will know he has that edge.
